Mollymook Ocean Swimmers tackle the 2022 Captain Christie at Gerringong

Drenched in tradition, the legend of the Captain Christie Ocean Swim dates back to 1882. It is believed Captain William Earnest Bartholomew Christie took up his sailor’s challenge to swim from Gerringong Boat Harbour around the rocky headland to Werri Beach – all for a bottle of the finest whisky. And he won.

Dave provided the following Mollymook feedback on today’s swim: “Here are some pics of the Mollymook swim squad who made the trip up to Gerringong for the Captain Christie Swim today. 1.8km from Gerringong harbour, north around the headland to Werri Beach. Greg, Kate, Chris, Sue, Wendy and Ian are showing off the bottles of scotch they received for finishing.  Melanie (Wendy and Craig’s daughter) also swam. Jill Pettifer received a prize for her age group”.

Mollymook Ocean Swimmers, New Year’s Day 2022

Over 30 swimmers swam on New Year’s day, some missing from the pic got an early start, driving up to the north end and some others arrived late. First group of swimmers to arrive back at south Molly were Tim, Ray, and John, however some were of the belief that they took off ahead of the starter’s gun. So actual finishing positions are being reconsidered. Altogether about 30 odd swimmers were counted in the water. Special thanks to Kate, Simone, Robbie, Cheryl and Chris for providing water safety. (Birthday wishes to Robbie whose birthday was on the 2nd. Simone’s and Leckshe Losal whose birthday is today January 3.)

Mike our MC gave the opening introductory message:

Quote “The foundation saga of the highly esteemed and prestigious Octopus’s Garden Award for the Mollymook Ocean Swimmer of the Year began in the ocean mists off Mollymook beach.

In the early years of this century, some legendary stalwarts of the swimming group decided it was time to formally recognise peers whose deeds were deemed to be especially intrepid and consistent in the face of shifting ocean conditions. Making it to the reef, or the creek, or the corner – and back consistently with style and grace (if not pace) were essential criteria, as were the joie de vie and general inspirational vibe of the person. Also by way of the dangers associated with ocean swimming and the creatures thought to lurk in the murky depths, it was noted that sometimes humming a few bars of the Beatles ‘Octopus’s Garden’ helped overcome one’s creeping paranoia.

And so it came to pass that the Award was established”.

Rescuing a lamb in trouble on the dirt road to Mutawintji

Bird Life, Inland New South Wales

October 11, arrived allowing regional travel to begin. I immediately left Mollymook and travelled to the Mutawintji National Park. Exiting the sealed roads, you have about  a 1 & 1/2 hour drive along the dirt Waterbag Road through numerous huge sheep stations, opening and closing cattle gates, other stations were separated merely by cattle grids en route to the Mutawintji National Park. Mutawintji is in Far Western NSW, approx.  130 km from Broken Hill and 350 km from Tibooburra. The ancient landscape of the Mutawintji National Park, is rich in Aboriginal history. Great  bushwalks and camping under the outback night sky.

I returned via Boorowa. Every entry into Boorowa has signage; “Superb Parrot, Superb Country, Welcome to Boorowa”. In the past 30 years driving through Boorowa I had never seen a Superb Parrot. Neither had a friend who grew up in Boorowa. So I just thought the signage to be a bit of nice advertising. The weather was not good, I parked at the Caravan Park, awoke in the morning to showers and an overcast sky and decided to pack up and go home rather than stay a day. Then, SWOOSH! The noise of about 50 or 60 Superb Parrots went overhead and landed in this tree next to the caravan park that was heavy in blossom.

The following week in beautiful weather, blue skies, ideal for bird photography, I took off on another trip out West. My first stop was the Boorowa Caravan Park hoping to get some good pics of the Superb Parrot. The tree that had been heavy in blossom had been stripped bare. Not a Parrot to be seen. So I headed to Young, not far from Boorowa and came across flocks of Superb Parrot’s. Thereafter I headed to Grenfell, then Forbes, the following day to Cowra, back to Boorowa then onto Jugiong. Then to the Yass River and gorge area on the way home.

The following pics below, are just a few of the many bird pics taken. Nonetheless they will give you an idea of the different varieties inland as compared to here on the coast.

The Castle, Morton National Park

The Castle, the iconic peak of Morton National Park.

The Castle is a spectacular and challenging day walk to one of the iconic peaks of Morton National Park. While the total distance is not large, the climb is capped by a series of exposed scrambles near the summit. Good fitness, coupled with a head for heights is required. The walk is not recommended when wet as the scrambles would be quite difficult and dangerous.

The walk is best from late autumn to early spring, as the cool weather allows for a more pleasant climbing temperature.
