May 2014 News – Mollymook Ocean Swimmers

Mollymook ocean swimmers,mollymook,ocean,mollymook beach,beach

May 2014 News

Plenty happening in this idyllic place, Mollymook.

  • Pete Humphries, where is he these days, they ask? Well the young reporter paid Pete a visit the other day at his building site. “He said well you know when to turn up, we are just finishing up for the day.” Take a look at Pete’s face covered in cement. They had been pouring most of the day beside fitting steel work into the water tank. It will be some house when its finished.
  • Feedback from last weeks article on Grant Kenny: “You two would have to have a body and face lift to look like Grant Kenny. And a sun ray lamp. Thanks for the laugh”. Allie
  • Christmas in May: Yes a special occasion, Jackie finally got out of bed and made a belated return to the ocean. And guess who she swam with? Grant Kenny!
  • The Kids from Cape York: Back on deck with their bundle of joy and sent through this pic below, taken of the amazing sunrise from their Garside home deck.
  • “Popeye” the photographer paid us a visit and took these beautiful images of the “Bogey Hole” and “A Lady and her companion”.

‘Ladies night out, Mollymook Ocean Swimmers’.

Sue writes; “After much excitement and anticipation the night had finally arrived : the Annual Girls Night Out for the Mollymook Ocean Swimmers. Despite not being the balmy summer’s evening one would expect the cool and blustery conditions did not dampen the spirits and fun of the nineteen happy partygoers.

A lovely night of chatter, laughter, reminiscences and friendship, enhanced by pizza and assorted cool drinks, was enjoyed by all gathered on Bannister Headland.

Meanwhile, on Narrawallee Headland the boys had gathered for a night to rival the girls festivities. Beer and wine flowed, enhanced by a terrific BBQ and salads supplied by the Hospitable Host Ian McLeod.

It is truly such a unique and special blessing to be a part of the Mollymook Ocean Swimmers – whether as a die-hard swimmer or as a friend or partner of these crazy year round swimmers. Nights like this bring it home and reflect the strong and enduring friendships amongst the swimmers.

Thank you and a Merry Christmas to all”.

Narrawallee Inlet, Birdlife.

Recently a friend took me around the Narrawallee Inlet in his small boat with an outboard motor. We especially headed up into the ‘backwaters’ in the hope of spotting and ‘Azure Kingfisher’. Although we didn’t see an ‘Azure Kingfisher’ we did enjoyed fabulous scenery and a number of different bird species.

Perhaps the highlight was travelling back to the entrance where there was a roped off section on the northern side of the Inlet entrance. We met some National Park volunteers who were ensuring the shore birds were safe during their mating and hatching season from any dogs off leash or humans, disturbing these shore birds. (Species we observed included Red Capped Plovers, Hooded Plovers and Australian Pied Oystercatchers.

Billy Rushton’s poem

Being a lover of your doggy companion, I’m sure you will relate to this poem that I’ve attempted to put together after sitting here in Covid isolation playing on the computer. I’m sure you will enjoy my attempt to portray the comfort and love pets can give to you. ( it’s about my son Andrew’s tradie dog called Rex).

ANDREWS BROWN KELPIE by Billy R.

Who barks and wags his tail with glee

And greets the new day joyously

With such a silly grin?

“My kelpie Rex .. that’s who”

Who, with head on paws

Waits patiently whilst I do the chores

It’s plain to see who he adores?

“My kelpie Rex .. that’s who”

Who sticks with me the whole day through

And never asks for favours,

No matter what I say and do?

“My kelpie Rex .. that’s who”

Who digs the holes in garden beds

And tears his sleeping mat to shreds,

Does his poos all-round the yard

Not caring where he treads?

“My kelpie Rex .. that’s who”

Who sometimes whimpers in the night

Perhaps from canines long – past fight?

“My kelpie Rex .. that’s who”

Who hides and howls with utter fright

When thunderstorms light sky at night

He’ll jump the fence and then be gone

So, bring him in with a soothing pat

And soon his fright abates?

“My kelpie Rex .. that’s who”

Who is my mate – not just a pet

I shan’t forget,

Perhaps and yet a mere brown dog

A loyal friend so very true

A staunch companion each day through?

“My kelpie Rex.. that’s who”

Bird Pics in the Queensland Outback

Bird life in the Cunnamulla area, Outback Queensland.

Cunnamulla is a town perched on the banks of the Warrego River in the Shire of Paroo, Outback Queensland. It is 206 kilometres south of Charleville, and approximately 750 kilometres west of Brisbane. In the 2016 census, Cunnamulla had a population of 1,140 people.

This town was once where bullock teams passed through and shearers spilled from bar windows; but today the small town is known for its natural outback beauty and outback hospitality.

Once again I came across bird species that I (a novice) had never before seen / photographed before, some included; Black Shouldered Kites, Red Backed Kingfishers, Plum Headed Finches, Rufous Songlarks and White Headed Stilts also known as Pied Stilts.

Open Water or Ocean Swimming?

Open Water at Charleville or Ocean Swimming at Mollymook?

John Sarich (nee Smeeth) sent through some pics and writes, “The Charleville chapter this season for this (distant) Mollymook ocean swimmer has just started at the Ward River, 20 kms. west of Charleville (just off the Diamantina Development Road). It took me longer to get in and out of my wettie than I spent in the water. It was freezing. Still 14 ° it can only get warmer now.

I enjoyed catching up with Ken and June and later on with Bobby White. Cheers, John”.

(The Ward River is over 455-km. long and flows down into the Darling River)

In fact, when I was in Charleville, John offered to take me out to the Ward River. I graciously declined. I thought, Ken just stick to taking some bird pics whilst out here in the Queensland Outback.

It’s hard to imagine John who was so into ocean swimming at Mollymook and venturing off to various ocean swim meets up and down the coast, receiving numerous community recognition awards and being the local Ulladulla swim coach retiring to Charleville, Outback Qld. But he is very happy and still doing what he had done on the Coast, SWIM!

How beautiful is this? Although a little cloudy, the water was ideal for ocean swimming with Don measuring the temp. at around 16 ° as the boys and girls hit the water.

Ken’s Bird life experience in Outback Queensland.

Charleville, is the largest town in the Murweh Shire, Outback Qld. It has a population of 3,000 and is highly recommended for a visit. Besides seeing John and having a swim with him in the Ward River, there are a variety of ‘must do’ attractions. It is 747 km west of Brisbane.

Once again I came across some wonderful bird species that I (a novice) had never before seen / photographed. Such as:  A Brolga that stands over 1 metre tall and has a wing span of 2.4 metres,  Splendid Fairy Wrens, Nankeen Kestrel’s, Major Mitchell Cockatoo’s and many more.

The ‘Bird Life’ captured in these images was taken at the Mudgee, ‘Putta-Butta’ Wetlands. The name ‘Putta-Bucca’ is an aboriginal word thought to come from ‘puttaba’ meaning “a hill near a creek”. I saw a diverse variety of bird life, even spotted a turtle.

Birdlife on the NSW North Coast

Bird life at Crescent Heads, Woolgoolga & Lennox Heads.

Having returned from our holiday on the NSW North Coast, the following are a few bird pics I took. The bird life species can differ a little as you move from area to area and I came across some interesting species on our travels along the NSW North Coast areas.

Some species I had never before seen / photographed; such as Helmeted Guineafowl, Spangled Drongo’s, Scaly Breasted Lorikeets, Cattle Egrets and a female Brown-Quail.

Destination Western Australia Holidays

Retirement, Holiday destination – Western Australia

Heather provides her retirement update, touring throughout Western Australia: “We spent 5 days in Kalbarri both the coast and inland national parks”.

(Kalbarri is a resort town at the mouth of the Murchison River, on Western Australia’s coast. It’s known for its seaside cliffs, estuary beach and wild pelicans. Nearby Kalbarri National Park has rocky gorges like the iconic Z Bend, named for a sharp bend in the river. The park’s coast is home to resident dolphins and seasonal humpback whales, seen from a boardwalk beside the Island Rock and Natural Bridge rock forms.)

Absolutely stunning great walks and wildflowers everywhere. We found 24 out of 29 plants on a leaflet. Lots of stopping along the road for photos .”💨😘 Love & hugs H&P

Ian and Leonie, Outback NSW.

Ian and Leonie provide an update to the Mollymook Ocean Swimmers on their trip, Outback NSW.

“We are travelling with our long time friends Shane and Noelene and our first stop was at Mildura. Wonderful Murray River foreshore walk then off to Wentworth experiencing the junction of the Murray and the Darling. Broken Hill was our next stop and armed Katie’s list of things to do it was all so good. RFDS, Art Galleries, Miners  Memorial (wow!) Silly Goat café, etc. it was such a good experience. Then to Menindee (sunset cruise but no sunset and not many birds) but lovely experience. Thru to Wilcannia then to White Cliffs where we are looking at opals. Well should I say Leonie is! Even in middle of the day avoiding kangaroo s ,emu’s and cattle is challenging. Biggest disappointment is there are not many bird sightings so far. Off to Cobar tomorrow.

Not doing any swimming out here so will be a bit slow by the time we get back home. So far we have had so much fun most of which I can’t put on this medium. See you all next week in togs, Ian and Leonie. “.

News Updates: Mollymook Ocean Swimmers

The Mollymook’s Ocean Swimmers

From the British Isles, Kath gives an update on her retirement travels: Hello Mollymook Ocean swimmers.

Hope you’re all well, how are you going Gary?  We arrived on the Faroe Islands Monday afternoon and wow, what a landscape! These pics are from a place called Gasadalur on Vagar Island where the airport is. Lots of tunnels here to get through mountains or from island to island. We are now on Streymoy island. Google translator app has been very helpful, but most people speak English.

Hey Andrew, we loved Scotland, would have liked more time there. And we did go to Glasgow. Well I haven’t swam in this particular area yet, but will definitely be going in the ocean. Love, Kath from Mollymook.

Father Peter Hendricks shares this news with the Mollymook Swimmers.

From Peter the Priest: Two pieces of news from me.

  1. My mum passed away last week (Wed 17th), while very sad, the good news element is that she was ready and it was peaceful. The family were all there for her last two days which was very precious.
  2. Last Saturday, the family gathered for my niece’s wedding, so in the midst of all that was happening, that was indeed a wonderful celebration.

Thanks for keeping everyone connected.  God bless.
