Margaret River – Prevelly Cafe

The local Margaret River – Prevelly swim group call themselves the ‘Sea-Slugs’. They number about 12 or so and meet at 7.30 am and ocean swim every day of the year followed by coffee at the cafe located at the ‘Boat-Ramp’. (The ‘Boat-Ramp’ is where they start and finish their daily swim). Winter temp. low gets down to 15c, presently about 20c.

They gave us ‘foreigners’ from Mollymook the warmest of welcomes. Possibly a characteristic of small groups, everyone of the swimmers were so friendly, warm and engaging. A wonderful morning and treasured memory. ‘Fredo’ 3rd in from the right won the inaugural National Iron-Man title back in the 1970’s beating Hayden Kenny father of Grant Kenny. He reminded me of our own Roscoe, an organiser and an absolute gentleman. Another swimmer over here is a Life member of the WA SLSC’s and knows our Jon Donohoe AM very well from when Jon served in an executive capacity. (It’s a small world)

Ocean swimming is quite big over here. The weekend we were in Albany they had there annual 4 Km across the harbour swim on the Saturday with 150 competitors, next day was the Denmark Ocean swim north of Albany. (Generally speaking, us in the Eastern states are possibly only familiar with the annual Rottnest Island ocean swim in WA).

The above two pics give an indication of the Prevelly Beach make-up. Huge waves breaking out back whereas in close is ideal for ocean swimming. (I learnt the hard way, ‘don’t hug the shoreline’, it was quite turbulent in close to the shore.)

These are some of the prettiest beaches we have ever experienced i.e.

Esperance Beach at Twilight Bay. Incredibly beautiful!
Augusta amazing rock pool and beach.
Yallingup Beach, I would describe it as ‘Breathe taking’
Gnarabup Beach at Prevelly, Margaret River. Mind boggling, it has all you could wish in beach swimming and surf breaks plus a café sitting on top of the water.
