Bronze Medal: Moni, Chez, Garth, Simone and Tracy

Mollymook Surf Club members ‘punched above their weight’ at the NSW Surf Championships for masters held at Umina Beach near Gosford this past week.

News reached the ‘Driftwood Cafe’ Milton at about 2.30pm on the Friday afternoon with celebrations already in full swing hearing of the memorable performance put in by the Ladies boat crew in the 160 years age category. Here we have a group of lady swimmers who only began rowing a surf boat a bit over a year ago. They dedicated themselves to their training and pulled off bronze at the State level in only their 2nd competitive row. Locals were stoked hearing of this amazing news!     (Image credits Moni)

Notable performances were also achieved by Tony Ireland in the 35 to 39 age category, Paul Burton in the 40 to 44 age category, Colin Mustoe (Kim’s partner) in the 55 to 59 age category, and the Mollymook male masters boat crew in the 240 years age category.

Mollymook March Past Team – Announced 5th

.

An awesome effort by our Mollymook Surf Club March Past team at the 2016 NSW Surf Titles.

John L. reports how the team initially struggled this year with low numbers and the retirement of Tom, the long standing Captain/Coach/Standard Bearer and Ando, our Belt-man.

John continues, “Many a team might have called it a day and disbanded but not the Mollymook marchers. With just a few weeks to go before State Comp at Umina, Rex Russell stepped up as belt-man and marching coach while Barry Page was kind enough to climb out of his surf boat and fill the Standard Bearer role at very short notice for this, our last chance to compete in an event this year.

We were also fortunate to retain part time services of Neville who marches for Burning Palms but travels from Batemans Bay to Mollymook whenever he can, to assist with our coaching.

Well thanks to the efforts of all, we did get to march and achieved a very respectable 5th place, scoring only 3 error points with 1 point separating us from Neville’s Bronze winning Burning Palms team.

That is by far the best performance our team has achieved for many years and a tribute to everyone who tried harder instead of quitting.

I know the team would like to thank Tom for his years of leadership and I’m sure the spirit to do well at Umina was largely driven by a desire to make Tom proud of the team he developed”. (Pics & report from John & Jacqui)

Dick M. sent in these recent sunsets and sunrises- from a couples of weeks ago. The sunset came from nothing- a drab grey sky with thick cloud- and then it all happened in a few minutes. Good to read how the crew went bike riding in NZ. Regards. Dick

The Bike Rider – Garry          (Pic credit Garry H.)

Garry H. wrote that he was pleased to see his fellow swimmers enjoying wonderful Kiwi hospitality. He has been doing a bit of cycling myself, but without having to pedal. Two weeks ago he peddled rode down to Phillip Island for the first round of the 2016 World Superbike Championship held over that weekend. Had a great time but looking forward to reuniting with everyone. See you all soon. Cheers, Garry
