Mollymook Beach Entertainment – Peter the Priest

Peter enjoys this glorious morning in Mollymook

The Exploits of Peter the Priest.

BOM meteorologist Melody Sturm gave her latest report on the current surf conditions and said, “We’re seeing waves over three metres high just off-shore, and closer to the coast (there’s) a little less height in those waves, but they’re still quite powerful”.

Peter the Priest having recently transferred from the Northern Territory to Sydney, chose to spend a few days at his favourite South Coast destination, Mollymook. Aware of the hazardous surf conditions, Peter revels in a big surf and this was his day. Whilst other swimmers spent their time in Mollymook’s ‘sooky corner’ Peter got out the back, waiting on the big sets to come through. From the Beach hut café, spectators were able to enjoy this incredible spectacle, as if Peter had nine lives or as another spectator mentioned, “maybe he has a higher power looking down, after him”.  Anyway after eight big sets of waves, Peter choose not to push his luck to far, and it was time for coffee, so he finally came back to shore.

Laura explained that this ocean swim will take me between eight and nine hours, however, it will only take you a few short minutes if you wish to contribute a donation to help us fight MND together. Where the Bloody Hell are You?

Where the bloody hell are you Chris?

Mollymook ocean swimmers,Mollymook,Destination Mollymook Milton Ulladulla,Mollymook Beach,Mollymook Beach Waterfront

Ski-less and alone . . .   A tale of romance and adventure on the high seas of the South Coast   (By contributing Editor Mike G.)

A howling nor-easter awaited as a socially distant cluster of intrepid ski paddlers made their way beyond the heads of Ulladulla Harbour en route to the southerly port of Lake Tabourie.

As they scooped and swayed ever eastward toward the continental shelf, the bravest among them – a fellow called Chris, veered his vessel to the right hoping to catch and slide the swell. With his comrades beside him he rode the waves, glancing over his shoulder for the next herd of white horses to carry him onwards to his beloved partner, Sue waiting on the shores of the mystical romantic south coast lake.

Suddenly, without warning, Chris and his ski were thrust high into the air by a rogue bombora. Crashing back into the briny, his leg rope (with expensive GPS enabled watch and very expensive ski attached) parted company with his body.

He was alone, ski-less and drifting in the angry sea miles from shore.

His paddler mates and his surf ski were gone, blissfully riding and sliding their way southwards.  With only his faith in his ocean swimming ability and his love of Sue to sustain him, Chris pressed the location device on his life jacket – flares and signals rang out.

In far off Nowra, a Navy helicopter was dispatched in haste.

Meanwhile Chris floated about watching for signs of dangerous sea life, reflecting on the meaning of life, and occasionally thinking about swimming the forty or so kilometres back to shore (actually, this needs a fact check!).  His reverie was disturbed some 30 minutes later by the sound of rotors overhead, and the sight of a rope (with rescuer attached) descending upon him.

Shortly after, Chris was hooked up, embraced, and ascending above the swell to the swinging, hovering refuge of the Navy chopper. When asked where he’d like to be dropped off, Chris answered ‘Milton please’. The helipad at Milton was cleared for landing, and the ambulance was ready and waiting to lead the cavalcade and await the media frenzy at Milton Hospital. Chris, his body littered with all sorts of devices to monitor his bodily functions, calmly disembarked and rang Sue who was waiting patiently down at Lake Tabourie.

‘You’re where?’ asked Sue feeling somewhat inconvenienced. ‘We are supposed to meeting everyone at the Milton-Ulladulla Bowlo for dinner, now we are going to be late’.  Needless to say, both Sue and Chris made it to dinner – and we were all very pleased and relieved that this tale of romance and adventure ended happily.

Chris was lost and then found – safe and sound. A tale of adventure and romance, which is – well – not all fake news!

Ed. Note: Chris is now at unbackable odds to take out the 2021 Mollymook Ocean Swimming – Golden Flipper Award

Mollymook Ocean Swimmers, New Year’s day 2021

Mollymook ocean swimmers,Mollymook,Mollymook Beach,Mollymook Beach Waterfront

Pic of the south end swim group plus others at the north end totalled approx. 40 ocean swimmers, some did the 2021 ‘length of beach’ 2km swim whilst others did both ways, 4 kms.

Mollymook Ocean Swimmers, annual ‘Length of the beach’ ocean swim, New Year’s day 2021

2021 was welcomed by the Mollymook Ocean swimmers as they met at the beach to undertake their annual ‘length of the beach’ ocean swim. Cloud above and chop in the ocean didn’t prevent this die hard group from enjoying their new year’s day swim with a water temp. of 21c. This is the paradise we remember Mollymook for in bygone years. (That is with the exception of 2020 which was a year, that we will never forget.)

Back in 2020 on New years day we awoke to the destructive / horrendous bush fires that had swept through our area the previous night and were still burning out of control on New Years day.  Most had no electricity. Bewilderment and disbelief were just some of the descriptive words used. There was no ‘length of the beach’ idyllic annual swim, as in past years.

It was a beautiful day! Laura swims 20 km

Mollymook ocean swimmers,Mollymook,Destination Mollymook Milton Ulladulla,Mollymook Beach,Mollymook Beach Waterfront

It was a beautiful day!

Arriving at Mollymook Beach prior to sunrise, rays of sunshine filtered through the cloudy sky. It was the beginning of ‘A Beautiful Day’ as swimmers began arriving throughout the morning at their allotted times. Laura and her mum, Monica were already down on the beach in the southern most area. Garry arrived to check, that all would go to plan. Sean and Lloyd arrived, put on their cosies and went down the beach to accompany Laura on the first 4 kms of her 20 km journey. Grant was also there with his stand up paddle board (SUP) to provide water safety. Laura felt truly blessed, rather than swimming on her own she would have company for the first 4 kms, with Roscoe joining in on their return journey. This meant so much to Laura.

At the completion of her first 4 km she saw more swimmers lining up to accompany her on the next portion of her swim that would take her distance to 8 km. Here was Greg, Mike and a Sydney swimmer, Steve in the water to accompany her with Simone on her SUP providing water safety. At the northern end of Mollymook beach turning for home she was joined by Sue and Kate as this larger group swam this 4th lap, with increasing swell and chop. At the end of 8 km and turning to begin her next 4 km return trip, Chris took the surf board to provide company and water safety for Laura. As they returned at the 12 km mark Chris was really feeling it in his shoulders.

With 8 km to go Garry jumped in the water to swim with Laura. Chris with such a big heart once again did another 4 km on the board for water safety despite his shoulders beginning to really hurt. At the 16 km mark, Garry the man with such a wonderful and humble nature couldn’t let Laura swim the last 4 km on her own, nor could Chris allow them to go without any water safety. So off they went, Garry would end up swimming 8 km non stop and Chris doing 12 kms on the board.

Arriving home at the conclusion of 20 kms, over 6 hours in the water, swimming in what turned out to be in difficult conditions, there was Lloyd and Ruth, Sue, Kaye and Monica, all present to share with Laura, in her remarkable achievement. Laura was lost for words trying to explain her gratitude for all the swimmers who turned up throughout the morning to make this such a memorable occasion for her. Although the swimmers are a motley crew in some regards, an odd  assortment of people who are largely drawn together through there common love for the ocean, its time like these when you see the beautiful caring nature become so evident in many of the swim group, chipping in as best they can to help out a friend.

Laura was as over whelmed with gratitude! Thanks to all the swimmers who contributed. It was a beautiful day!

Mollymook Ocean Swim

20 km next Sat. Dec. 12, 2020

Laura is planning to do 20 km (10 laps of Mollymook Beach) next Saturday in preparation for her 27 km Whale Beach to Shelly Beach marathon swim, due in late January 2021.

Garry J. suggested how good it would be if some of our Mollymook Ocean Swimmers could accompany Laura for a lap or two next Saturday. When Garry’s suggestion was later mentioned to Laura, she was elated to think she may have some company swimming next Saturday. So provided conditions are ideal, if any of our swimmer’s feel up to the challenge, Laura plans to start at 6.00 am. Each two laps (up and back) takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. So her following laps should begin around 7.20 am and so on throughout the morning, finishing some 6 1/2 hours later, just after lunchtime. It would also be nice for some volunteers for water safety.

For those who would like to join in, discuss with Garry J. throughout the week to see what can be arranged.

Absentee – Mollymook Ocean Swimmer

Swimmers ask where is Heather? Home watching TV!

Where is Heather? Any absentee note? We can’t even ask Kath where is Heather as Kath is off in her own little world enjoying herself on holidays before retirement.

Heather writes: “Thanks for all the news, Happy birthday Elise, looked like a fun night. Great photos of the ocean, I am missing the ocean and walking. I have been quiet and laid up for a couple of weeks. I’ve had surgery on both feet, one foot looks like it will be an easy recovery but the bunion & tendon surgery on the other foot has been more difficult. Very light weight bearing with crutches and feet up most of the time. Paul has been great and my brother and his wife have been visiting, so good timing! Friends have called round with coffee and books and a laugh.

Lots of binging on Netflix and google Play. Off to Sydney on Thursday to have it all uncovered and see what they say!”  XXX Heather

Kath exploring Breadknife and Grand High Tops Walk in the Warrumbungle mountains

Holiday before retirement, exploring the Warrumbungle mountains & onwards to Red Rock

Kath provides an update: “We have spent three days exploring this amazing ancient bit of landscape, on many walking trails through the beautiful Warrumbungles”. The name ‘Warrumbungle’ is believed to mean ‘crooked mountains’. This is an appropriate name describing the distinctive jagged skyline of the Warrumbungles, with its domes and spires separated by forested ridges and deep gorges and surrounded by plains and tablelands. The Breadknife and Grand High Tops walk is the jewel in the glistening crown and is must do for bush walkers who love a challenge with their scenery. The track follows Spirey Creek before climbing steeply to give close encounters with iconic formations such as Belougery Spire, Bress Peak and Crater Bluff.

As a matter of interest, the Breadknife is a volcanic dyke approximately 90 metres high and 4 m wide, thus the name. It is a 12.9 Km walk.

Moni, John and Tracy, Robbie and Simone, Jo and Ian were among the many parents at the Civic Centre / Ulladulla Harbour to witness the joy and jubilation being shared among all the 2020 Ulladulla High School graduates. The youngsters were dressed to the hilt in some amazing eye catching outfits. They looked stunning as they lined up either in groups or with parents for some beautiful photo shoots using the harbour as a background. Whilst it was an overcast afternoon, we were still able to get some lovely photos.

Dolphins at North Mollymook

North Mollymook was the best spot for swimming last week whilst South Mollymook was subjected to strong Nor-East winds and currents. So the call was made to meet at North Molly last Thursday. However, apparently someone forgot to tell Issi, nonetheless all the swimmers were back at south Molly the following day albeit a little confused on where to swim due to the strong northerly current prevailing.

Step back in time: Visit Historic Grenfell

Enjoyed a wonderful experience, visiting the historic town of Grenfell.

Mollymook Ocean swimmers,mollymook news,mollymook beach waterfront,Grenfell caravan park,Grenfell,Grenfell Royal Hotel,Grenfell Bird

Grenfell Caravan Park: Bob awakes, after sleeping the night in his tent. (The temperature was below zero on this occasion).

Grenfell’s history is so evident as you stroll down the main street and visit some of its old buildings and spend time talking to local character’s, some who have spent a lifetime living in Grenfell. The town came into being as a result of gold being found back in 1866. A highlight was to visit O’Briens Hill and take a walk through the old gold diggings and shaft where so much gold was found and view the remnant mining machinery.

We camped at the local Grenfell caravan park which we found to be very clean and conveniently located within walking distance into town and to numerous points of interest viz. the magnificent aquatic centre, Company Dam, the Silos, Historic Railway station, the Chrysler Car Museum, Visitor Information centre and so much more. Found Clare at the Visitors centre to be extremely knowledgeable and helpful.
