Laura prepares for her start from Cottesloe Beach with the 1000 odd swimmers beginning in ‘waves’ (groups)

.

The Rottnest Channel Ocean Swim took place on Saturday February 24, 2018. In its 62nd year, it is considered the iconic ocean swim on the Australian National Ocean Swim calendar. Ulladulla was represented in this epic 19.7 Km swim by Laura Wallace. More than 1000 swimmers took part with the swim beginning in ‘waves’ (groups of swimmers) leaving from Cottesloe Beach from 5.46 am onwards. For almost half of this year’s swimmers, including Laura it was their first time competing in this marathon open water swim.

Laura had spent months each evening after work churning out the Km’s at the Ulladulla Leisure centre outdoor pool in preparation for this marathon swim as well as swimming in some ocean swims at Mollymook and Manly.

Rottnest Island Ocean Swim – Course Outline

.

Laura will be Mollymook’s sole representative in this years Rottnest Island Channel Ocean Swim. It is a 19.7 km open water swim from Cottesloe Beach to Rottnest Island and is highly regarded worldwide besides being one of Western Australia’s iconic events.

Laura has her family over here for support, plus she has organised a local boat crew and kayak paddler for water support in this gruelling ocean swim. Laura plans to swim the entire distance solo and hopes to complete the 19.7 Km Rottnest Channel Ocean Swim in under 7 hours.

By chance I met up with Laura this morning at Cottesloe Beach where all swimmers were congregating for their swim briefings in readiness for tomorrow Saturday’s 6.00 am start. Laura has spent the last few months churning out the laps after work at the Ulladulla Leisure centre’s outdoor pool. I also met up with Vlad, one of Dick M. and Graeme C. swim mates from Balmoral who was among a large contingent of NSW swimmers over here for the event.

The event is managed by the Rottnest Channel Swim Association, is held in February of each year and considered Rottnest Island’s biggest day.

The Mollymook Swim, Board, Ski squad travelled to South West Rocks on the weekend of February 3 and 4, 2018. Squad members performed exceptionally well winning a number of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. There were numerous other efforts that just finished shy of a medal, but nonetheless gaining valuable points for the Mollymook Surf Club in the overall Club points tally.

Mollymook U/19 Female Crew: GOLD  (17 year old girls competing in their 1st carnival)

.

Some great stories emerged from the NSW Country Surf Titles but perhaps nothing more inspirational than the four Mollymook teenagers rowing at their first carnival who out rowed crews more senior than themselves to claim GOLD in the Under 19 female boat race. The teenagers consist of Eliza Green, Mia Garin, Kyla Wall and Chloe Scott. They row under the super competent coach and mentor Marty Drysdale.

On their way to South West Rocks to compete at this weekend’s Country Surf Titles, Mollymook Surf Club members Robbie and Chloe S. called in to have a surf at Crescent Heads. The surf came up over night providing a lot of fun and challenge to the brave of heart. We have heard that there is no beach left at high tide due to the big seas at South West Rocks. Should be interesting competition this weekend.
