17 yr old Sammy Zustovich Mollymook Surf Club wins the Open Beach Flags

.

A highlight that must rank with the best for the entire 2020 NSW SLS titles was the win by young 17 year old Sammy Zustovich competing in the Open Beach Flags. He led all the way but the win didn’t come easy, take a close look at the 2nd placed competitor. Besides being a champion athlete, Sammy is mature beyond his years and a wonderful role model for our younger athletes.

Prior to this above pinnacle of all beach events, Sammy had won GOLD in the U/19 Beach Sprint and GOLD in the U/19 Beach Flags.

The Mollymook Surf Clubs, Ladies ‘A Reserve’ boat crew competed at the State Championships (2020 NSW SLS titles) in what I recall was either their 3rd or 4th only competitive carnival. The crew consists of Mardi Schulz, Bec Austin, Liz Ford, Dani Dunajcik and Marty Drysdale (sweep). Its fabulous to see their progress throughout the season and the great  ‘action photography’.

Tony Ireland was another standout performer for the Mollymook Surf Club. Competing in the 40-44 years age bracket he caught a huge wave to gain SILVER in the surf race and later in the Surf Rescue Tube he gained a BRONZE medal.

These two pics show the ferocious ‘Shore Break’ the boat crews had to navigate with starts being on the sand/shore. The 200 year Men’s master’s crew in the L/H pic after the starter’s gun had been fired waiting for a clean start.

R/H pic is the ‘A Reserve’ Men’s crew about to hit the sandy beach on their return with a dangerous shore break following them in.

(L/H pic) Back in 2006 this Mollymook Surf Club’s Girls Relay team won the ‘World Championships’ at Lorne Victoria. Now in 2020 some 14 years later they came out of retirement to claim GOLD in the Female 140 years Master’s Beach Relay. Pic above Sue Keogh, Armalie Muller, Tegan Davies and Ash Smart (Cheney)
