Who could have ever imagined, hardly a soul at Mollymook, and its the Easter long weekend.

Golf club closed, Surf club closed, Newsagent closed, beach not patrolled, motels and holiday accommodation properties empty. Welcome to the former tourist mecca on the NSW South Coast, Mollymook. This is Easter 2020.

Easter is normally a time for friends and family. It’s a chance to take a break, unwind and reflect. But this year its very different. There are no group barbecues, picnics or footy. Just more time indoors, waiting this thing out. Hopefully you’re all coping okay with the isolation. Today my wife suggested we go to the movies at 37 Riversdale Ave. She had chosen the DVD titled; ‘Seeking a friend for the end of the world’. It explored the crazy things one does when humanity’s last days are at hand. Under our present ‘self isolating’ circumstances, I didn’t find it inspiring.

Thanks to John & Jacqui, Jo and Ross, Lloyd and Lekshe for sharing their stories last week. Comments included:

Louise wrote; “Missing everyone… it’s just not the same …. something we take for granted is seeing our friends.. our people everyday….. now we can’t see our people you realise just how precious our morning swims, banter with friends mean”.

Mike sent this message from Canberra; “What strange times! I am missing being at Mollymook with everyone, not sure when we’ll be there next. I hope that you are all managing to safely traverse this peculiar and worrying landscape.  Elisabeth and I are OK, staying housebound, venturing out occasionally for essentials and a bit of walking exercise. I am doing those odd jobs that seem to have been waiting in the shadows for years! Hopefully things will return to normal soon – and we can all swim together again – to the reef, the creek, the corner . . . ANYWHERE . .., (ahhh)”

Lena (stranded in Australia, with nothing much to do) wrote; “I really enjoy reading the articles about the swimmers. This one last week was amazing !” (It included a pic of Lena)

We would love to hear some more stories, share your story/experience with fellow swimmers who are mostly locked up!

This week we hear from Dick Morath, Ian and Leonie McLeod, James Mabbutt whilst Bernie shows of his new backyard following his purchase in Clyde Street.

Dick Morath sends this dispatch from the frontline! Melanoma removed from my head in Mater Private Hospital- no swimming for a month! Nurses and doctors terrific and ready to do all emergency admissions if the public hospitals get overloaded. Very impressive. Look forward to swimming with you all again when lock down ends. Best wishes to all- and keep your hats on! Regards.

Leonie and Ian McLeod wrote: Hello to all from Lockhart. We are missing being down there with you all but adhering to Premiers warnings. To have a sense of occasion and to make our Saturday night dinner special we dressed for the occasion but alas Ian still needed to cook the steak thus the photo.  Keep safe all and we look forward to coming out the other side.

James Mabbutt hails from Terrigal. He is a trained nurse and spent time down here providing counselling at the ‘Disaster Recovery Centre’ in Ulladulla during January and February. Albeit most mornings he was able to fit in a swim at Mollymook with the gang.

James sent this message: I just wanted to say hello and check out to see how you are all going. I am very sorry that there is another huge blow happening to all those around your area with this virus locking things down. The Ocean swim, the people travelling down at Easter has all gone.  Very sorry that this has happened straight after the fires. I understand the clean up is happening but it must be very frustrating the speed of it and the associated issues. I am also the sorry the focus has moved away from the bush fires so soon.

It has been very wet up here since I returned. I know you will be supporting each other as you have in the past. Swimming for us is rather strange up here.  Standing apart, entering the water in a staggered way and the coffee catch up afterwards is the best part.  It’s not like it use to be.  At least we have decent coffee and the water is still warm. I haven’t followed up on buying some Mollymook swimmers but that is on my list. Work for me has been busy as we prepare for what might be a head. I may be back in the wards or who knows where.  Being a general trained nurse this doesn’t worry me, as long as I have the protective equipment.

My planned trip to head back down for a swim has been delayed, but I will be back.  I would love to get up the ‘Castle’ again and also Pigeon House mountain. Please say hello to those who I met back in Jan and Feb and take care. The Mollymook Swimmers book was fantastic. I cant imagine the amount of work put into it.   What a historical document.  What a standard to try and live up to. Great job Ken and the many who helped you.  I am thinking about getting into the Ocean Swimming round about.  Maybe in a year of so time. Regards, James.

Bernie has posted the pic on the right. The block of apartments he just bought, he has named ‘5th Green’. Unfortunately for Bernie he has no guests and the golf course is closed.
