Tribute to a trailblazer – Midget Farrelly

Vale – Midget Farrelly
Our first world surf board champion, Bernard ‘Midget’ Farrelly has died, aged 71. Midget won his world championship in 1964 and in subsequent years was runner-up in 1968 and 1970.
As a kid riding a surfboard he grabbed everyone’s attention by walking to the front of the surfboard and hanging 5 or sometimes hanging 10. As youngsters we were gobsmacked just watching his skill, which to this day many strive to emulate.
Midget the ‘Trailblazer’!
The following images were taken at Crescent Heads this past weekend of the modern day surfboard riders who have also mastered the skill pioneered by Midget on a ‘long board’.

Surfboard Evolution
After a snow ski trip seeing how snow boards performed daring maneuvers and had such speed, it is understood the idea came to surf board designers to experiment with smaller surf boards to gain speed and maneuverability in the post Midget era.
