The ‘Whitty Shark’
The sighting of a ‘Whitty Shark’ (or Great Whitty) off Mollymook Beach Saturday morning fuels speculation that these creatures are on the increase.
Elite Ocean Swimmer Ross Whitty spotted the shark’s large dorsal fin during our morning swim and signaled the alert.
Reef swimmers were beyond hearing range so were left to their own devices while the rest began to prepare for a speedy return to shore.
Fortunately the alarm status was downgraded to an all clear within seconds when the ‘Whitty Shark’ morphed suddenly into a playful Dolphin.
These ‘Whitty Sharks’ tend to crop up from time to time when swimmers are in the water.
Experts attribute their appearance to the fact that they tend to feed on the human imagination: the sighting of the lifted elbow of a fellow swimmer, piece of driftwood or floating weed can easily bring them close. We’ve all seen them eh!
“All jokes aside though, it’s good to be swimming with folk who are alert and make the call if there’s any suspicion of something nasty out there … So thanks Rosco.” (Contribution: John L.)
