Destination, Outback NSW

Ian and Leonie, Outback NSW.

Ian and Leonie provide an update to the Mollymook Ocean Swimmers on their trip, Outback NSW.

“We are travelling with our long time friends Shane and Noelene and our first stop was at Mildura. Wonderful Murray River foreshore walk then off to Wentworth experiencing the junction of the Murray and the Darling. Broken Hill was our next stop and armed Katie’s list of things to do it was all so good. RFDS, Art Galleries, Miners  Memorial (wow!) Silly Goat café, etc. it was such a good experience. Then to Menindee (sunset cruise but no sunset and not many birds) but lovely experience. Thru to Wilcannia then to White Cliffs where we are looking at opals. Well should I say Leonie is! Even in middle of the day avoiding kangaroo s ,emu’s and cattle is challenging. Biggest disappointment is there are not many bird sightings so far. Off to Cobar tomorrow.

Not doing any swimming out here so will be a bit slow by the time we get back home. So far we have had so much fun most of which I can’t put on this medium. See you all next week in togs, Ian and Leonie. “.

Mollymook Ocean Swimmers Update

Where are Mollymook’s Ocean Swimmers

Charleville here we come: Yes the Queensland outback was Ken and June’s destination to catch up with former Mollymook Milton Ulladulla legend, John Sarich (nee Smeeth). After many years of giving and giving to the local  Mollymook Milton Ulladulla community and acknowledged on numerous occasions as well as being the originator of the Mollymook Ocean Swim group (read all about John and his accomplishments in the Mollymook Swimmers book), John has retired to an idyllic lifestyle in the peace and quiet of Charleville.

It was such a delight to catch up with John, he has a beautiful home and a lovely backyard, loves the outback and has become a real student of Australian history especially in relation to the outback.

John sends his regards to all and hopes to catch up with us and have a swim next time down our way.

Retirement: a new chapter in ones life

Destination Western Australia

Heather provides her retirement update, touring around Australia: “Hi to all the ‘Mollymook Ocean Swimmers’ hope all are well. A few more pics to share, we made our way South to Francois Peron national park at Shark Bay, amazing country & colours. Shell beach with no sand just tiny cockle shells. Big Lagoon camp then headed into a remote area, hectic 150klm return of 4wd rutted roads and sand hills to Steep Pt the most Western point in Australia. Camped at Shelter Bay on the beach such a stunning area. Artesian pool for a soak. Kalbarri next.”💨😘

Summer in Scotland

Kath writes: “Hello dear swimming friends hope you are all well and looking forward to spring. I keep forgetting it’s summer here Scotland, we have not experienced any heatwaves here. Ocean temperature a steady 12degrees and the change room on the beach is chilly. But worth every minute😊 (Geoff’s not good at smiling for photos)☺️

Isle of Sky, Isle of Harris and Lewis were spectacular. We are in lovely Inverness for a couple of days. On Monday we leave beautiful Scotland for the Faroe Islands”.

Hope you are all keeping well and that Garry is on the improve, Love Kath.X

First adventure, beginning retirement

Destination Western Australia

Heather provides her retirement update, taking off on a tour around Australia:

“We made it to WA and the van has been amazing, we have free camped half the time since we left home, Loving Wiki camps. Had a swim at Ceduna it was a tad cool but the suns been out. Canola fields, wind farms, back roads. Long straight roads 😉road trains. We have made our way up the middle in the mining area, so many mines, I’m surprised. Done a lot of back road driving. Called into Kalgoorlie and off road to a site with aboriginal rock art, we then headed to Karijini national park a highlight for both of us. Such a stunning area full of gorges and colour and texture. Hope all the swimmers are doing well” 😘

Mollymook in the Headlines

Mollymook Surf Club volunteers support the Australian IRB Championships

32 surf clubs with a combined total in excess of 1,000 competitors from throughout Australia are here in Mollymook for competition over 4 days, beginning today, in the various categories for the Aussie IRB Championships.  Despite the rain today, the athletes came to compete, and compete they did. Official results each day will appear on the SLS Australia web page, https://sls.com.au/ and their Facebook site: slsaustralia

Once again, our Mollymook surf club volunteers did us proud, staffing the kitchen, the BBQ van, also providing IRB assistance, 1st Aid and help everywhere else, in wet and rainy conditions.

Destination Cape York

Bucket List accomplishment, Cape York.

Christina writes: Rodney and I have made it to the “Tip” (Pakinka ) Cape York, the northern most point of mainland Australia. It is within the Shire of Torres in Queensland. Another beautiful destination to cross off our ‘Bucket List’. A long and splendid drive from Mollymook but unfortunately  no ocean swimming on Cape York as waters are infested with Crocodiles.

The drive from the black top was along fairly rough roads and a real wilderness experience, but so worth it, to be able to stand at the northernmost point of the continent. Even from the car park it is a rough 1 kilometre track over rocks to the Tip sign, but well worth the effort. Expect to be back in the water at Mollymook Beach mid August. Best wishes to all Christina and Rodney.

Ocean Swimming in the Irish Sea

SUMMER IN LONDON

Kath writes: Hello dear Mollymook ocean swimmers, hope you are all well and staying warm. We have been in London for 10 days exploring this vibrant city and loving it. Galleries, pubs, food, people watching and flowers blooming everywhere! It’s been great taking our time and not having to rush and see everything in a short time. Geoff’s flat is in a great spot and very comfortable.

On Sunday we are going to Dublin and explore Ireland for 3 weeks.

The weather has been perfect although the locals are melting. British Rail advised us not to travel by rail on Monday when the temperature is expected to reach 35 degrees as services could be disrupted. We had to smile to ourselves, imagine our summer temperature’s here!

I’m looking forward to getting in the Irish Sea for an ocean swim next week, probably freeze my butt off!   Love Kath.X

Mollymook Ocean Swimmers go walk-about

Wild weather hits the Mollymook – Ulladulla area.

Rainfall in the past 24 hours to mid-day Saturday July 2 was in excess of 200mm with the worst predicted for tomorrow Sunday with further falls through to Tuesday. Was it intuition or fore-knowledge of heavy rainfall that caused a few wise ocean swimmers to get away and have a holiday?

Dave decided to head to the NSW South West.

Hearing of a delightful town in the Riverina called Lockhart, which describes itself as a ‘historic verandah town’, it took Dave’s imagination. So off he went. He reported that; there certainly are lots of veranda’s, homes and business’s.

Kate with Dad & Mum and Dr. Katie – each reaching their 40 year milestone.

The ‘who’s who’ of Mollymook Milton Ulladulla turned up for this momentous occasion. Doctors, medical staff, Chemist, business people plus family member’s who travelled from Sydney and interstate, some local surf club member’s and a few humble ocean swimmers came together to share in the celebration of this milestone occasion, a common birthday shared by Kate and Dr. Katie. It was a beautiful night, lovely speeches and sumptuous food dishes devoured by guests.
