2015 White Stripes – Pinot Grigio

.

St Isidore Restaurant one of six regional restaurants in NSW to receive a ‘hat’ in 2015. We arrived to a very warm and friendly reception from our young waitress. Obviously skilled in customer service. From the onset the anticipation grew. She showed us the menu and carefully explained each of the dishes including those just recently added to their ever changing attractive menu.

It was no surprised to see this ‘fine dining’ restaurant full for a Saturday lunch with a mix of dinners who obviously enjoy quality food as you would expect from a restaurant recognised so highly over the past few years.

Our choice of wine followed our waitresses recommendation, a 2015 White Stripes, Pinot Grigio. She explained it was light, vibrant and crisp and would be the ideal compliment to our white meat meal choices. An excellent choice!

Duck rillette with beetroot

.

The ‘Blue Swimmer Crab’  was an explicit dish, evenly balanced with speck, fennel and pomelo delicately mixed with new season crab. It was accompanied with a splash of shellfish sauce. A smart chef, well done.

The ‘Duck Rillette’ with beetroot and grilled bread was like nothing we had previously enjoyed on previous visits to St Isidore. My wife summed up this dish as “very special”. A noticeable ‘duck’ dish, thicker in substance than the image above shows and perfect with the grilled bread and a layer of beetroot.

Riverina scotch fillet with salsify, baby onions & turnips

.

Free range chicken with Chinese cabbage & shiitake. At our previous visit, our good friend and may I add a real ‘Melbourne foodie’ had waxed eloquent about this dish. So this was the obvious choice for my wife and it did not disappoint. Succulent ‘free range chicken’ presented at its best accompanied by Chinese cabbage, shiitake, chestnuts, ginger and the right amount of persimmon fruit to achieve a lovely balanced meal.

Scotch fillet with salsify, baby onions & turnips. It was a toss up between this fillet dish and the slow cooked lamb that I had enjoyed the previous month. The latter being a magnificent dish. I normally only eat ‘eye of the fillet’ steak, so I was somewhat hesitant to choose a ‘scotch fillet’. Once again our wonderful waitress explained the virtues of each dish that led me to the ‘Scotch Fillet’. It was a super tender fillet steak enhanced by the salsify (I understand grown in their own garden on site) which provided an oystery taste when cooked although appearing as a long, thin parsnip. My taste buds were further enhanced with the addition of the baby onions and turnips.

Green beans, chives & butter was the choice for our side dish. Beans are my favourite vegetable and these were plentiful and prepared to perfection.

Affogato desert: ice-cream, smothered with strong coffee & liqueur

My decadent choice for desert: What better way to finish a beautiful meal than with some ice cream smothered with coffee and liqueur.
