NSW State Surf Titles. Day 3 – Masters Boat Racing

With a southerly wind blowing the surf had risen noticeably in comparison to the previous days. Day 3’s main focus was on the Surf Boat Racing by the ‘masters’ boat crews, male and female. The big surf resulted in a bit of carnage with the strong competition.

The 180 Female swimmers crew of Simone Scott, Monica Mudge, Tracy Holt and Charyl Garin were swept by veteran Garth Brooks. They demonstrated enormous courage in the big surf conditions and rowed exceptionally well to gain a Silver medal in tough competition.

Mollymook U/19 Female Crew: GOLD  (17 year old girls competing in their 1st carnival)

.

Some great stories emerged from the NSW Country Surf Titles but perhaps nothing more inspirational than the four Mollymook teenagers rowing at their first carnival who out rowed crews more senior than themselves to claim GOLD in the Under 19 female boat race. The teenagers consist of Eliza Green, Mia Garin, Kyla Wall and Chloe Scott. They row under the super competent coach and mentor Marty Drysdale.

The Rod Austin OAM Surf Boat

Samantha Crockett reports on today’s event:

A very special morning on the beach, blessing Mollymook Surf Life Saving Club’s new surf boat, aptly named after our club’s President, the‘Rodney Austin O.A.M.’ What a gentleman, legend, role model and asset to our club.

Such a wonderful turn out from club members near and far. So lovely to see some of our Nippers witnessing the fraternity that this club is, friendship, family and respect for its long serving members, right through to life members.

Special thank you to the Butler duo who performed a beautiful indigenous blessing of the new boat to ensure the safety of the club’s rowers whilst competing and out to sea. Much respect.

Thank you Shoalhaven City Council Mayor Amanda Findley for taking some time out of your Sunday to share in the event and show your support.

And lastly to the sponsor of the boat, Holiday Haven Resort’s. Thank you for all of your support. I’m sure there will be many medals won for our club in our new boat thanks to your generosity.

The Great Maestro – Raymondo (Pic credit: John L.)

.

Queens Birthday honours, an ‘Order of Australia’ medal was bestowed on Mollymook Surf Club President Rodney Austin this past Monday. Rod has performed beach patrols for 50 years having joined the club in 1967. Word has it that he has never missed a patrol, even when serving ‘National Service’ he was able to make it back to Mollymook to fulfil his beach obligations.

The Great Maestro – ‘Raymondo’ played to a packed house this past Monday afternoon at the ‘Star Entertainment’ centre. It is understood guests present were from afar a field as Balmoral in Sydney and the nations capital Canberra, who all enjoyed this distinguished violinist playing some Irish classics.

Mollymook Ocean Swim took place in idyllic conditions on Saturday April 8, 2017

.

Mollymook Ocean Swim

Mike and Julie reported that Saturday April 8 was an absolutely beautiful morning with a gentle 2-3 foot swell rolling in for the annual Mollymook Ocean Swim Classic. The water at the start was crystal clear. A short sprint, a few small waves to negotiate then into the blue water.

Awesome results from the local molly swimmers with Gary Jenner and Helen Gray winning their age divisions with great swims…congratulations!!!! The rest of the Mollymook contingent were indescribably brilliant on the day filling all sorts of non-consequential finishing positions…..but all finished !!

Volunteers stepped up again in a big way from water & watermelon tents, timing, BBQ, water safety, etc etc…and a massive well done to Rossco on a successful day.

About 200 competitors took to the water and the winning times were very fast indeed. Ken Banks alter ego (Stand in photographer Julie, replete with striped shirt) had to sprint back down the beach just to get to the finishing line before the winner Jarrod Poort tore up the beach to win. The Women’s winner was Lily O Sullivan in a fantastic time.

Sponsors. Roscoe made special mention of the tremendous response they had received from so many sponsors with a special thanks to the Ulladulla Ex-Servo’s club for their on-going support.

A fantastic day had by all.

Highlights a many, as the Mollymook Ocean swimmers represent the Mollymook Surf Club at the NSW Country surf championships / Surf Titles at South West Rocks. Big D was all nerves until the starter fired his gun and AWAY he went. I think he surprised himself at how well he went. Then there were our four beauty queens who row a boat in their spare time. In almost every race they were ‘slow out of the blocks’ giving their opposition a big advantage, however ‘youth prevailed’ and our ladies would mow them down one by one. Either the sweep got angry or they have awesome character. (Nothing harder than coming from behind in most races).

Blue Bottle Invasion on coastal beaches

Blue bottles have been washing up on our coastal beaches by the bucket loads recently. With their annual arrival, many questions and myths about these creatures seem to be drifting around as well.

What exactly are blue bottles? Do you really pee on their stings? How do you keep a day at the beach from turning into a real pain?

Mollymook Boat Carnival surprise result

.

The unexpected happened in the sleepy NSW South Coast village of Mollymook.

A massive upset occurred at the Mollymook Boat carnival.

Approximately 80 boat crews assembled at Mollymook on this lovely spring day with a decent surf rolling. Expectations were high for the experienced Mollymook Male Vets boat crew to do exceptionally well if not win their division, especially when the punters took into effect the number of times this Male Vets crew had won medals at the NSW State and National Championships.

No-one expected a ‘Brexit’ / ‘Trump’ moment (when the totally unexpected happens) at this boat carnival. However against all odds the Mollymook Ladies Vet crew pulled off the nigh impossible. They drew the toughest heat of five crews that included the all conquering Mollymook Male Vets. Getting off to a reasonably even start the Mollymook Male Vets crew turned for home at the cans slightly ahead of the female crew. Under pressure, the male crew climbed onto a wave that would have given them a clear edge, only to come unstuck big time and see the female crew cruise on by.

‘A moment in time’ during training for the Mollymook Ladies Boat Crew

.

The Sweep utters an expletive     ………..

mollymook,Mollymook Ladies Boat Crew,beach,surf club,ocean swimmers

…..   that was the ‘cue’ to brace yourself for the unknown.

.

Unlike most other days training in the harbour, the sweep chose the surf for this training day after considering they have their first competition this Saturday at the Mollymook Surf Boat Carnival.

It was relatively calm as they took off from shore, the girls were at peace and filled with enthusiasm as they began to power their way through the shore break …… then their ‘gentlemanly’ sweep uttered an expletive ‘sh.t’. Simone recalls that with our backs to the oncoming waves we have no idea what lies ahead. But when we here an expletive uttered we brace our selves for the unknown or as Simone recorded on Facebook: “What happens when the sweep yells ‘SH.T’, we went missing for a bit. … what a way to start the day. Sun, fun, friends and adrenaline”.
